LINCOLN — The Cedar County News won nine awards and was named runnerup for the Sweepstakes award at last weekend’s annual meeting of Nebraska newspapers.

All weekly and daily newspapers, regardless of size, are lumped into one category for the Sweepstakes judging.

The Cedar County News won three first place plaques and six second place plaques during Saturday night’s Nebraska Press Association awards banquet.

April 17, 1996

LINCOLN — After decades of lobbying for a bridge across the Missouri River at Niobrara, work is scheduled to begin next week at the Missouri River Bridge site.

Jensen Construction Company of Des Moines, Iowa, has the $12,456,485 contract for grading, culverts and a new bridge.

Larry Hausman, Hartington, is the Department of Roads manager on this project.

HARTINGTON—Once again, a local business has exhibited confidence in the progress of Hartington. Marty Cayler, President of the Farmers and Merchants Bank, has announced plans for the construction of a new bank building. The forty-four feet by sixty-four feet brick building to be located on Highway 15 will be built by RaDec Construction of Hartington.

HARTINGTON—Hartington native Russ Hochstein is hoping to receive a call from the NFL. Hochstein was a three-year starter at offensive guard for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He helped the team earn an undefeated season and share of the National Championship in 1997. He and his family will be together, as they wait to here if he is drafted as a professional football player.

HARTINGTON—The Cedar Catholic golf team won their own dual with Osmond and placed third at the 17-team Laurel Invitational. Rory Sudbeck posted a 36 for first-place honors. Lance Heine came in second with a 38 Robert Dreesen third with a 41 and Ryan McGregor was fourth with a 42.
