HNS musicians place at NE Jazz Festival

NORFOLK — Members of the Hartington-Newcastle Varsity Jazz Band took home a second-place trophy in competition with of 14 area bands at the NE Community College Jazz Festival March 30.

This is the first time HNS has placed second at this event according to plaque history.

The Jazz Band performed “Valero” by Swearingen featuring Alyk Zach and Trynity Zach, “I’ll Always Smile in the Spring,” by Alrich featuring Trynity Zach on the trumpet, and “Fat Cat” by Doug Beach featuring Cell Martell on the trumpet and Max Wiedenfeld on the Alto Sax.

A soloist award is given when 2 of the 3 judges nominate a student for a soloist award. Earning a solo award at NE Jazz Festival was Trynity Zach and earning soloist awards at USD were Cell Martell on the trumpet and Trynity Zach on the trumpet.

Hartington-Newcastle musicians selected for Class C All-State Band are: (bottom row) Alyk Zach, Kyptin Collier, and Trynity Zach, (middle row) Merrick Folkers, Kate Wiedenfeld, and Camryn Bruning, (top row) Tate Dickens, Elliot Kneifl, Max Wiedenfeld, and Sarah Clark.
