Wortman, Thoene earn top honors in writing contest

HARTINGTON — Writers from across the region put their creativity on display this winter as local author Peter Talley hosted his eighth annual creative writing contest.

The contest continues to grow each year, drawing participants of all ages and experience levels, Talley said.

This year’s event featured 28 entries from communities including Hartington, Randolph, Omaha, Lincoln, Des Moines, Council Bluffs and St. Joseph, Mo.

Participants were invited to submit original short stories, poems or essays centered around board games and the shared experiences they create.

Entries ranged from humorous moments around the table to imaginative pieces about life inside a game.

The contest, which includes separate categories for youth and adults, aims to encourage creativity and celebrate storytelling.

Top honors for 2026 went to Elsie Wortman, who earned first place. Anthony Thoene placed second, followed by Natalia Schmidt in third.

Talley said the contest began as a small local effort but has steadily expanded in reach, with organizers hopeful participation will continue to grow across Nebraska and beyond.
