Feilmeier, Krause lead HNS track team at Plainview

PLAINVIEW — The Hartington-Newcastle track teams traveled to Plainview for the Ray Doerr Invitational on Mar. 31 and the boys brought home the runner-up plaque from the meet while the girls placed a couple of athletes on the track.

Norfolk Catholic edged out the Wildcats with 81 points while the ‘Cats posted 79 team points.

Will Feilmeier had a great day in the wind bringing home a gold in the 100 with a time of 11.60 seconds, placed second in the 200 after a 24.48-second showing and anchored the Hartington-Newcastle 400-meter quartet which circled the track in 46.15 seconds to grab gold.

Mason Krause had a fine day on the track and in the sand with a pair of second-place medals in the triple jump and long jump as well as joining Feilmeier in the 400-meter relay for that gold along with Aiden Walter and Maximus McCray.

McCray won the triple jump over Krause as the two hit the sand after 42-feet, 2-inches.

The ‘Cats scored some points in the pole vault with Ty Opfer edging out Jason Heimes for third after both clearing the bar at 10-06. Opfer had less misses at the lower heights.

Issac Santiago placed fourth in the 3,200 with a time of 11:45.07 and brought home a sixth-place medal in the 1,600 with a 5:19.37 clocking.

The Hartington-Newcastle 1,600-meter team of Colter Feilmeier, Trevon Hopping, Gabe Sovereign and Nathan Heimes placed fifth with a time of 4:04.25.

The Lady Wildcats earned a pair of fifth-place medals for the day.

Ella Eickhoff was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 56.86 seconds and just missed scoring some points in the pole vault placing seventh.

Jade Ford hopped, skipped and jumped to the fifth-place hardware in the triple jump with a best of 30-10.

Ford, Eickhoff, Lainey Morten and Justyce Sohl just missed with a seventh-place 400-meter relay finish.

HNS will host their own invitational April 8, then travel to Pender on April 10.
