Youngest citizens celebrated during “Week of the Young Child”

COLERIDGE — The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association of the Education of Young Children, the world’s largest early childhood education association.

Early childhood is a time of rapid brain growth. During this period children gain cognitive and social skills that help form the foundation for their future learning and academic success. A child’s experiences, positive or negative, influence the wiring of their brain and the connections in the nervous system.

During the Week of the Young Child, all who are around children birth through eight are encouraged to engage in positive activities. The NAEYC is providing a week of engaging resources centering around key components of early childhood education, with themed days focusing on music, cooking, working together, art and family fun.

“Every day is a great day to celebrate children and support their development and well-being,” said Amanda Christensen, director at Building Blocks Early Childhood & Family Development Center, Laurel. “The Week of the Young Child is a time to be more public in educating the potential of young children in the early years.”

“It’s also a reminder as we come together this week to understand the work of the early childhood profession, as they work for the children, families and communities. The early childhood field is one of the most powerful investments we can make in our future.” said Carol Benson, owner of Carol’s Child Care, LLC in Coleridge.
