RANDOLPH — Randolph’s proposed swimming pool is an actuality. The funds necessary to insure its construction were raised Friday and Saturday of last week and work has already been begun.
Over $4000 has been subscribed and most of it has been paid in. A meeting will be held the last of this week to determine whether the work will be done by local men in charge of the committee or be turned over to a swimming pool construction company. The trees in the northeast corner of the city park have already been cleared off and work will be resumed immediately following the decision of the officials in charge.
F. C. Meyer of the Sanitary Swimming Pool construction company of Sioux City was in Randolph Tuesday of this week looking over the situation and conferred with members of the Waltonian pool committee. He is prepared to turn in a bid on the work. It is the opinion of those in charge that the work will be much more satisfactory if handled by this company which will start work next week if their bid is accepted, and will guarantee the pool against cracking or bulging.
According to present plans a more elaborate outfit is called for than was at first proposed. These additions include several sanitary devices and a somewhat better bath house. Chief among the sanitary devices is a water circulator which will keep the water in the pool in constant motion and will keep it completely aerated.
To install this additional equipment more funds, in excess of $1000 will be needed. With these extra funds something more than $5000 will be available for building the pool and at this figure the most modern and up-to-date swimming pool that we could have can be constructed.

Editor’s note: The following is one of a series of articles regarding a special election scheduled April 1 for issuing $39,000.00 in bonds for a park improvement program including a new swimming pool. The article below takes a look at the old pool.
Although Randolph’s swimming pool is in a badly deteriorated condition and needs replacing there should be widespread agreement that it has served its purpose well.
The pool was originally constructed in 1925 and for many years was one of the few swimming pools in this section of the state, and was acclaimed and admired in a wide area.
However, during the past 10 years or so many towns have built new swimming pools for their communities, and the Randolph pool has dropped from the top of the heap to the bottom.
First serious talk of a swimming pool for Randolph was started in the spring of 1925. The pace of action on the project was fast and furious.
By June 25, 1925, over $4,000.00 was subscribed by the public for the project which cost approximately $5,000.00. It was opened to the public on July 23, 1925, just 22 days after construction started.
William Eike, late Randolph businessman, was the superintendent in charge of the construction of the pool.
The pool served capably for many years, however after an inspection by the State Department of Sanitation in 1959, the state threatened to close the pool if certain recommended improvements were not made. The pool was not meeting the minimum standards of the state health department.
A drive for funds for park improvement was spearheaded by the Modern Mrs. Club early in 1960 with $1650.00 earmarked for pool improvements, including a filter system.
This brought about temporary relief, however in the past few years city officials report there has been regular trouble with the filter system with another major problem being the terrific leakage.
Because of malfunctions of the filter system and the leakage it became necessary last year to fill the pool once a week and sometimes more often. As a result much of the time the water was too cold for enjoyable swimming.

RANDOLPH —Randolph voters will go to the polls Tuesday, April 1, in a special election to decide whether to give the City Council permission to issue negotiable bonds in the amount of $39,000.00 for the purpose of a park improvement program including a new swimming pool.
If voters give the council the green light, there will be a total of $73,500.00 of federal and state funds to go with the Randolph funds for a complete recreation area project to cost an estimated $112,500.00.
If the proposition is turned down federal and state funds will not be available and hopes for a new Randolph swimming pool will be gone.
The project has been in the planning stage since 1964.
It has been arranged through the combined efforts of the Randolph Planning Commission, the Nebraska Game Commission and Harold Holkins & Associates, planners and engineers.
The most attractive feature of the proposed project is a new swimming pool to replace the old pool which was constructed in 1925 and which has deteriorated to its present poor condition. Because of malfunctions in the filter system and the leakage it became necessary last year to fill the pool once a week and at times more often.
Also included in the proposition is the acquisition of 8.4 acres of land which will be used to expand the park facilities to include a football field and track separate from the present baseball diamond, camping and picnicking areas. There will also be two sites providing 14 parking spurs for campers, with each spur provided a fireplace or grill, and a table.
Included in the project are several restroom units to be constructed at the park area.

RANDOLPH —Randolph voters went to the polls Tuesday and gave emphatic approval to a bond issue of $39,000 for a park improvement program including a new swimming pool. The vote was 283 votes in favor of the proposal and 85 against it.
The proposal carried by a majority of over 76 per cent. In the north ward it was favored 154 to 43 for 79 per cent, and in the south ward the margin was 129 to 42 for 75 per cent.
Neil Kluver, liaison officer between the Randolph Planning Commission and the City Council, reported that he received a letter from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, stating that state and federal funds for the project should be available in August or September. Construction is expected to begin in the spring of next year.
In the city election two present members of the council, Wendell Eddie and Fred Rokahr, were returned to office as successful write-in campaigns were conducted in behalf of the two men.
Feb. 26, 1970
RANDOLPH — It was moved by Rokahr and seconded by Kaiser to authorize the Western Laboratories, Lincoln, to make the soil survey at the site of the new swimming pool. Motion carried.

RANDOLPH —Work is progressing slowly on the construction of Randolph’s new swimming pool however assurances have been made it will be completed by May 1, 1971.
Christiansen Construction Co. of Pender is the contractor.
Work was first slowed when dirt compaction at the bottom of the pool and the area under the bath house failed to meet specifications and had to be redone. Pouring of the concrete in the walls has been held up when necessary fittings and drainage materials were mis-sent from Texas to Chicago.
Jun. 3, 1971
RANDOLPH —The new swimming pool will be open Saturday from 2 until 9 p.m.
The city has hired Robert Meyer of Allen to be pool manager this summer.
He attends Military Academy in Lexington, Mo., where he will be a sophomore.
The new swimming pool facilities include bath house, large L-shaped pool and a small pool for the small children. It will furnish hours of entertainment for the people of the community. People are urged to use and take care of these facilities as they are an asset to the community.
