1931: Lammers, Kuehn elected to Fordyce board

April 9, 1931

FORDYCE - The ninth grade history class is studying the political conditions in Europe just before the World War.

The ninth grade English class has written some very interesting character sketches of characters in Rudyard Kipling’s “Captain Courageous.”

We were glad to welcome as visitors to the school Misses Dorothy and Leona Kruse on Friday; Lillian and Charles Johnson on Monday; Robert, Donald and Lucille Depue last Monday.

The pupils enjoyed an Easter party last Friday afternoon. Games were played and then the arrival of the Easter rabbit was announced which had brought the children large candy eggs.

Spelling booklets have been made. The pupils used their own ideas in decorating the covers. The Horn-Ashbaugh method is used and a bluebird is given as a reward for each hundred for the week’s work.

FORDYCE - I. F. Lammers and George Kuehn of Fordyce were selected at the polls Tuesday by the people of this town as members of the village board.

These men were voted as trustees to supervise the civic affairs of the community.

There was no contest staged at Fordyce, for the residents wanted these two men and wrote their names in on the ballot. The printed ballots handed to the voters contained no names.

The town board will organize for the year at their next meeting.

HARTINGTON -At a meeting held at Wausa by the fans from Hartington, Randolph, Wausa, Creighton and Bloomfield, steps were taken to organize a northeast Nebraska baseball league. Dr. Swift of Crofton will be asked to act as president. Crofton or Plainview will be invited to join to make it a six-club league.

No club will be allowed to hire more than three outside men. The salary limit was left open until the next meeting, which will be held tonight at Wausa.

Each town is to have one director and these are to settle all difficulties.

A series of 18 or 24 games will be played, on Sundays only. A constitution and by-laws will be adopted and a schedule will be outlined. It is intended to start the games in May.

Practice to start First workout of members of the 1931 baseball club of this city will be held next Sunday afternoon at Hartington campus, weather permitting. The workout is scheduled to commence shortly after 1:30 o’clock.

Rates now for country phones are a few cents more than previously.

The approximate increase per month for city phones is 35 cents and a discount of 25 cents for cash if paid within the stipulated time.

During the company’s 22 years of existence, it has cost $5,000 in interest to carry delinquents, and it was impossible to stand the burden any longer, it was stated. It has an investment of $25,275, expenses of $5,043, and a profit last year of but $929.00.
