KEARNEY — The Cedar Catholic speech team did something Friday that no other Cedar speech team has done in over 30 years.
The team claimed third-place honors in Team Sweepstakes at the State Speech Meet here.
Landon Rutar was also named the Johnny Carson School of Theatre C2 Individual Sweepstakes Champion. He took runner-up honors in the Humorous prose division and sixth place in POI. He also teamed with Langston Christensen to earn State runner-up honors in the Duet division.
Ava Stewart was the state champion in Informative Speaking.
Cedar Catholic Speech Coach Erin Pfeifer said the team easily met the goal she had set for them.
“My goal going into the State Competition was for my team to give their best performances,” she said. “I had no idea how blessed we would be in our efforts.”
The hard work the team put in this year really showed, Pfeifer said.
The hard work the team put in all season long really showed up at State, Pfeifer said.
“These kids are insanely dedicated, talented, supportive of each other, and downright fun to be around,” she said.
This season has been an enjoyable one, she said, because she has been able to witness so much growth by team members.
“As fun as it is to be having success as a team, the joy I find in coaching comes more from watching each individual speaker grow throughout the season,” she said. “They provide a light in my life that I didn’t know I needed, and I can’t wait to help that light shine brighter in seasons to come.”
The future looks pretty bright for future Cedar Speech teams, she said.
“With the amount of growth in size and skill that I have seen in this team through the past two seasons I’ve been with Cedar Catholic, I am confident that these results are still set to climb for years to come,” she said.
