Crowning moment

New housing development officially opens

HARTINGTON — Community leaders, and state officials gathered here Monday to help the community celebrate a big milestone.

The ribbon was cut on the new Nordby Addition housing development. Rob Woodling, President of Foundations Development, which spearheaded the rent-to-own housing development, said the project will fill a big void here.

'There is such a need for affordable housing in rural Nebraska. This project just made sense,' he said.

Woodling said all 12 of the units are now under contract. The final contract was drawn up this week for the final unit, he said.

This is the farthest north his Omaha-based company has built a project. He took a look at Hartington after an Omaha friend told him he needed to visit 'God's country,' his hometown of Hartington.

'We took a drive up here. It's a beautiful town with a beautiful park system,' he said. 'You support a vibrant business district and two school systems. That trip here made me want to come to Hartington.'

Like any project, there were some challenges that had to be overcome before the project could get underway, he said.

'There were some financial challenges because of costs, so we had to scale back and only build 12 houses instead of 15,' he said.

Work on developing the site began in 2024, while construction of the houses began in early 2025 after building permits for the 13 homes were approved by the Hartington City Council.
