HNS wins its fourth straight District speech title
CREIGHTON — The Hartington- Newcastle speech team is on a mission.
The HNS Wildcat Speech team qualified 17 entries Friday en route to its NSAA C2-3 District championship at Creighton High School.
The Wildcats claimed the title in dominating fashion, medaling in 19 of 20 entries and scoring 332 team points to win its fourth straight district title.
Cedar Catholic finished as the District runner-up with 10 state qualifying entries and 272 team points.
“I can’t express enough how proud the coaches are of the students who competed on Friday,” HNS speech coach Kyle Stevens said. “We faced some really tough competition throughout the day, and our kids really stepped up to that challenge.'
Now the Wildcats are on a mission to keep another streak going — state championships. HNS has won two straight state titles and three in the past five years.
Stevens' team wasn't the only local winner.
'It was a good day for our team, and it was a good day for Speech in the Hartington community,' Stevens said, as he commended the Cedar Catholic speech program.
'This kind of result is a product of the dedication and commitment they show all season to each other, their coaches, and this activity,” he said.
The local speech team members are next in action at the state meet in Kearney at Kearney High School on Friday, March 27.
“We have some work to do to prepare for a great day of competition at state,” Stevens said. “We are all really excited for the opportunity to compete and are ready to put our best performances out there and see what happens.”
