WAYNE — Cedar Catholic opened its track season in impressive fashion March 20, turning in multiple gold-medal performances and record-setting efforts at the Wayne State College Indoor Meet.
Anisten Wortmann led the Lady Trojans with a dominant showing, setting two Wayne State Dome records. She won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.84 seconds and added a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash in 58.31.
“Anisten looked strong in both of her races,” said coach Blair Kalin. “Under 60 seconds in the 400 in the first meet is a really good time, inside or outside.”
Madison Eickhoff added a fourth-place finish in the 1,600-meter run (6:03.29), while Brynn Bernecker placed sixth in the 200 (28.10) and narrowly missed a medal in the 400 with a seventh-place finish.
On the boys side, the Trojans were equally strong, highlighted by individual titles from Kighter Wortmann and Cooper Hochstein.
Wortmann won the 800-meter run in 2:05.14, while Hochstein claimed the 400-meter title in 52.65. Teammate Hunter Kuchta made it a one-two finish in the event, placing second in 53.08.
Jared Rutar added a runner-up finish in the shot put with a throw of 50-1, and Micah Cattau and Keaton Kaiser placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the pole vault after both cleared 10-0.
Joe Bowen contributed a sixth-place finish in the 1,600. Cedar Catholic also swept both long relay events. The 1,600-meter relay team of Hochstein, Wortmann, Mason Baller and Kuchta set a new facility record with a winning time of 3:34.49. The 3,200-meter relay team of Kuchta, Myles Baller, Bowen and Wortmann added another gold with a time of 8:46.54.
“We ran very well for the first meet,” Kalin said. “It was good to get out and compete against runners from another team. Our two long relays looked really good, and Cooper and Kighter led us on the track.
“Jared had a good day in the throws, hitting 50 feet, and we medaled two pole vaulters. Overall, it was a good start.”
Cedar Catholic will remain indoors for one more meet, competing March 26 at the Mount Marty Indoor.
