WAYNE — Recognized as the leading authority on the art of stepping, Step Afrika! will present a heart-pounding performance at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, at Wayne State College in the Peterson Fine Arts Building’s Ramsey Theatre. The performance will conclude Wayne State’s 2025-26 Black & Gold Performing Arts Series.
Tickets are required. To obtain tickets, visit www.wsc.edu/performingarts and select “Buy tickets.” Tickets for the public are $10 each. Wayne State students, faculty, and staff attend free, but must obtain a ticket using their NUID number on the ticketing website.
Step Afrika! blends the percussive dance style of historically African American fraternities and sororities with traditional African dances and contemporary movement. The show is a must-see for all ages.

Founded in 1994 by C. Brian Williams, the company has evolved into one of America’s cultural exports with tours to more than 60 countries across the globe.
Recent international tours include Croatia, Ukraine, South Africa, Dubai, Poland, Bolivia, Kuwait, South Africa, and Senegal.
Step Afrika! currently ranks as one of the top 10 African American dance companies in the U.S.
The company has 19 full-time dancers – all college graduates, many who attended Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Step Afrika! also promotes stepping as an educational tool to college students across the nation and through summer youth camps, focusing on teamwork, academic achievement, and cross-cultural understanding.
In 2023, Step Afrika! became the first dance company to be inducted into the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA) Hall of Fame.
The company is known for its prominent interactive stepping exhibit at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, became the title holder for the “largest stepping dance” in the Guinness World Records™ in February 2025, and recently appeared on NBC’s “Today” show and “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”
In addition to headlining President Barack Obama’s Black History Month reception, the company also performed at the first-ever White House Juneteenth celebration.
a Nebraska Kid Governor. During the meeting, Mayor Knudsen congratulated Alma on her leadership and commitment to civic engagement at such a young age. The proclamation highlighted her dedication to representing Nebraska students and encouraging youth involvement in government and community leadership. Her selection as Nebraska Kid Governor reflects both her passion for making a difference and the strong support for student leadership within the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge School District, Knudsen said.
