LINCOLN—The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans finished as runners-up in C2 State basketball. Cedar tried to dam up the Sandy Creek dynasty in the Class C2 girls basketball state title game, but the Cougars opened the floodgates in the final few minutes to stave off the upset bid and pull away with a 55-49 win.

LINCOLN—Cedar Catholic senior Erin McCabe landed a spot on the Class C2 All Tournament team. The 5-10 Cedar standout averaged 14.3 points per game during the three-day tourney. She was the second leading scorer in Class C2.

LINCOLN—Katie O’Grady scored 18 points and Sally Witt added 15 as three-time defending Class D1 state champion Falls City Sacred Heart stopped upset-minded Coleridge 6354 in the opening round of the girls state basketball tournament.

LINCOLN — It’s a Tale of Two Cities for Cedar County’s two smallest school districts.
Wynot Public Schools is the only public school in Cedar County that will see an increase in state aid to education next school year. Coleridge Community Schools finds itself with the largest percentage of decrease in state aid in the county.
Wynot Public School will receive a 25 percent increase in state aid over this year — $513,999 in state aid to education for the 2006-07 school year. This is an increase of $130,382.58 over last year’s state aid.

LINCOLN — About a dozen community leaders descended on the Unicameral Thursday. The Hartington contingent spent the day with government officials and observing the Legislature. The group included members of the Hartington City Council, Hartington Economic Development Board, Cedar County Commission, and Chamber.

COLERIDGE — A simple message from the front lines in Iraq to the folks back home proves a little kindness can go a long way. Concern for the safety of Iraqi children by a U.S. soldier in Iraq started a chain reaction that included a Cedar County School’s National Honor Society. It all started with Sgt. Eric Pearson, who drives a convoy truck with the 189th Transportation Company.

CROFTON — Eighteen Cedar Catholic Junior wrestlers competed at the Crofton Tournament. The team had one gold medalist. Seven local wrestlers earned second-place honors.

LINCOLN — Down by a point at halftime, Crofton had Ashland-Greenwood right where it wanted the Bluejays. The defending champion Warriors held Ashland-Greenwood to one field goal in the third frame and went on to a 47-39 state game win.
