HARTINGTON — Robert Fleming has been appointed Cedar County Highway Superintendent by the County Board. The appointment is effective immediately.

The appointment of Fleming consolidates the offices of the Highway Supt. and County Surveyor. Fleming has worked as County Surveyor for the past five years. Fleming will receive a total salary of $1,544 per month.

According to members of the Cedar County Board, Fleming’s appointment is the first in a series of moves to restructure the County Roads Dept.

“We are considering an entire restructuring of the department,” Commissioner Marlen Kraemer said. “We will be setting up new policies and procedures, working on job descriptions and trying to set up a chain of command. We’ll be using a foreman system, and hopefully it will be more efficient.”

Commissioners said part-time Road Dept. head Jerry Kavanaugh will work until May, as agreed at a December County Board meeting.

“We felt we needed a transition period,” Kraemer said.

RANDOLPH - The Randolph High Cards ended their basketball season on Monday in the finals of the district tournament when they were bested by Atkinson West Holt 54-44.

The Cards gained their shot at a trip to the state tournament Friday when they upset Osmond 55-39. The Cards won in the opening round of the tournament when they won over Crofton, 43-39.

Mark Strathman, who was slowed somewhat by a knee injury, and Kirby Meyer led the Cardinal offense with 14 counters each.

The Cards pulled probably the upset of the tournament Friday as they pulled away from Osmond in the final period to win.

The Cards played a highly intense defensive game with Paul Koehler leading the charge with an effective trapping defense that shut down Osmond’s high scoring duo of Mike Buchanan and Pat Daly.

Coach Lyle Nannen said the entire defense played an outstanding game, and their effort truly reflects what kind of young men make up this year’s team.

Paul Koehler also led the scorers for the Cards as he totaled 20 points, including a perfect night at the free throw line when he connected on eight for eight. Other Cards in double figures included Darcy Speer with 12 and Kirby Meyer with 10.
