HARTINGTON — Cedar County Commissioners approved several permits and received updates from two departments during their Feb. 24 meeting.
The board approved a Special Designated Liquor License request for the Cedar County Ag Society for Sunday, March 29. Ag Society member Russ Flamig told commissioners Cedar County will host a meeting of area fair boards that evening. A catered meal will be served and a bar will be available for those attending.
While Flamig was present, Commissioner Dave McGregor informed him the county plans to apply a chip seal to the oil road in front of the fairgrounds.
“It’s been four years since the county last did this,” McGregor said. “It’s about time we do it again.”
McGregor said the work will be completed after the March meeting and well before the start of the Cedar County Fair in July. He also asked for permission to stockpile the chips at the fairgrounds prior to the project. Flamig indicated that would be acceptable.
Commissioners also approved a keno license name change for a South Yankton restaurant and bar. The establishment, owned by EMR Ventures LLC, is now operating as Bruno’s Roadhouse. It was previously known as Backroad BBQ.
Cedar County Highway Superintendent Carla Schmidt reported that a company has contacted her oce about potentially installing additional fiber optic lines in northern Cedar County. Commissioners expressed concern about previous projects where roads were not restored to acceptable condition following construction work. Schmidt also said a Randolph-area resident has inquired about building a home along a road currently designated as minimum maintenance. The individual asked whether the road could be upgraded if construction proceeds.
County ocials indicated the coun ty would be required to maintain the road up to the property if a residence is built.
Commissioners also asked Schmidt to study a half-mile stretch of 562 Avenue north of Hartington to determine whether it should be formally closed. The section lies between Roads 887 and 886.
Schmidt said the roadway was established in the 1800s but is no longer being used.
“It’s not functioning as a road today,” she said. “It should probably be cleared o the books."
Zoning Administrator Tim Gobel presented four building permits and two variance requests for board consideration.
Building permits were approved for:
• Scott Labs, Precinct 1, for a 36-by-54-foot detached garage.
• Ray Kaiser, Precinct 3, for a 40-by-160-foot machine shed.
• Ryan Lammers, Precinct 10, for a 1,900-square-foot residence.
• Deb Konken, Precinct 7, for a 42-by-50-foot storage building.
Commissioners also approved two variances.
Curtis Kathol was granted a 38foot variance to construct a shop in Precinct 5.
A 10-foot rear setback variance was approved for Commission Chairman Richard Donner and Brock Hawkins for construction of a new shop. Donner abstained from voting on that request.
