HARTINGTON - Elroy Hefner, of Coleridge, announced Monday he has filed for the state legislative seat now held by Jules Burbach of Hartington.
Burbach, currently Unicameral speaker and state senator from the 19th district for the past 20 years, will not seek re-election.
The 19th District includes all of Knox and Cedar counties and parts of Pierce and Wayne counties.
He is an agri-businessman from Coleridge and is a part owner of Hefner Oil & Feed Co., dealer in gas, oil, feed and fertilizer. He is presently a Director of the Nebraska Petroleum Marketeers Association and was president of the group for two years.
He has been a member of the Coleridge Board of Trustees and was Mayor for two terms. He is a member of the Community Development Corporation, and served as its president. During his tenure, he can be credited with aiding the community’s efforts to build a Medical Clinic and was instrumental in gaining paved streets in Coleridge.
During World War II, he was in the Navy for three years, serving in the So. Pacific Theatre. Hefner has been a continuous member of the American Legion for 30 years, and was Commander for several years. He has been a member of the Coleridge Volunteer Fire Department for 26 years. He also is a member, and past president, of the Coleridge Commercial Club.

HARTINGTON -Warren Patefield, Route 1, Laurel is the first to file for State Senator from the 19th District. Senator Jules Burbach of Hartington who now holds that legislative office, has announced that he will not seek re-election.
Mr. Patefield, a life long resident of Cedar County, is engaged in farming, and specializes in raising hogs and beef. The family 640 acre farm is located nine miles North of Laurel.
