2001: McCabe earns spot on C2 All State team

LINCOLN—Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans finished runner-up in the Girls C2 State title basketball game.

Cedar Catholic tried to dam up the Sandy Creek dynasty in the Class C2 girl’s basketball state title game, but the Cougars opened the floodgates in the final few minutes to stave off the upset bid and pull away with a 55-49 win.

HARTINGTON—The Hartington City Council agreed on a new employee health insurance package. The Council has been reviewing proposals from several agents. They agreed to go with a proposal from the Hartington Insurance Company.

LINCOLN—Cedar Catholic senior Erin McCabe landed a spot on the Class C2 All Tournament team. The 5-10 Cedar standout averaged 14.3 points per game during the three-day tourney. She was the second leading scorer in Class C2.

HARTINGTON — One candidate has thrown his hat into the ring to succeed Tom Noecker as Hartington Mayor.

Dan Kathol has filed for the office. Noecker announced recently he would not seek a second term in office. Instead he filed for the Dist. 40 Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Doug Cunningham, Wausa.

OBERT — The Nebraska Department of Roads has closed the State Shop that has been in Obert for over 50 years.

During the planning stages of the Vermillion-Newcastle bridge which spans the Missouri River, the Nebraska Department of Roads took the first step in relocating the shop.

“Land was purchased in Newcastle to be used as a new site for a State Shop,” said Tim McCoy, District Maintenance Supervisor for the Dept. of Roads. “The whole idea came about in 1993.”

HARTINGTON — Hartington community leaders plan to take advantage of two opportunities to bend the ears of state and national leaders.

A special Hartington Day is planned at the Unicameral Thursday, March 2.

Carla Becker, Hartington Development Coordinator, and Chris Miller, Economic Development President, met with City Council members Monday to invite them to participate in the special day.

WAUSA — The Trojans and the Wildcats collided Tuesday in a rare Broadway Street match-up between these two Hartington schools.

Changing enrollment placed both schools in Class C-2 this year and the state schedule forced this showdown in SubDistrict action.

Cedar Catholic rode Eric Hames’ hot shooting hand and good free throw shooting down the stretch to earn the 57-44 victory over the ‘Cats.
