HARTINGTON — A Newcastle man died Tuesday evening, Feb. 24 following a single-vehicle traffic crash in Cedar County, law enforcement reported.
According to the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred about one mile west of Obert on Highway 12 at approximately 5:30 p.m.
Deputies say the eastbound 2001 Ford pickup driven by 26-year-old Austin Burcham of Newcastle ran off the roadway, overcorrected and rolled down an embankment.
Burcham, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and transported by Wynot EMS to Sanford Medical Center in Vermillion, S.D., where he was pronounced dead. The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office.
The fatality marks one of the early traffic deaths on Nebraska roadways this year. According to preliminary figures from the Nebraska State Patrol and Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT), 19 people were killed in traffic crashes statewide in January 2026 alone, up from 14 fatalities in January 2025. Of those January deaths, authorities reported multiple crashes involved rural roadways and a mix of conditions; not all victims were wearing restraints at the time of their crashes.
Statewide NDOT fatality reports for full 2025 show 227 Nebraskans were killed in traffic crashes over the year, matching the total from 2023 and reflecting ongoing safety concerns on rural and urban roads, alike.
These reports include all types of vehicle crashes statewide and are compiled annually by the department’s Highway Safety Section.
Traffic deaths remain a leading cause of injury and death across Nebraska and the nation, with crashes involving rollovers, rural roads, and lack of restraint use contributing significantly to fatalities. State and local safety officials continue encouraging motorists to buckle up, avoid distractions and drive cautiously to reduce future losses.
