HARTINGTON — Thirty-three members of the Hartington-Newcastle FCCLA chapter put their skills to the test at the District 7 STAR Event Competition held Feb. 2 at Wayne State College.
The event — part of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America program — featured Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) competitions, where students present projects and demonstrate leadership, career preparation and real-world life skills tied to Family and Consumer Sciences coursework.
At district competition, students are evaluated by judges and awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze ratings. Top finishers earning qualifying scores advance to the Nebraska FCCLA State Leadership Conference.
This year’s state competition will be held March 29-31 in Lincoln.
Students who qualify at the state level may earn the opportunity to compete at the FCCLA National Leadership Conference later this summer.
STAR events allow students to compete in a wide variety of categories, including culinary arts, nutrition and wellness, leadership, community service, early childhood education and professional presentation.
Projects often require months of preparation and include research, portfolio development and live presentations before judges.
