Winkelbauer, Lewon help to lead 4-H workshop

HARTINGTON — Youth gathered at the Hartington Public Library Feb. 14 to celebrate two things they love: 4-H and reading. February is 4-H Month, recognized nationwide as a time to highlight the impact of 4-H youth and programs.

In Cedar County, two local 4-H members shared their love of 4-H and books by leading a hands-on workshop at the library. Clara Winkelbauer, daughter of Chad and Katie Winkelbauer, and Heidi Lewon, daughter of Mitch and Brooke Lewon, partnered with Nebraska Extension Educator Jackie Steffen to plan and lead the event.

There were 15 youth attending the workshop. Participants recycled old hymnals and transformed them into decorative book vases. Each youth selected silk flowers and created a personalized arrangement just in time forValentine’s Day. For many, this was their first project of the season to enter in the Cedar County Fair in July.

Winkelbauer and Lewon plan to share their instructions with others interested in making a book vase at the March 26 4-H Family Night in the Hartington Auditorium basement.

The public is encouraged to attend 4-H Family Night to see what opportunities 4-H has to offer.
