HARTINGTON -Cedar County Sheriff Gordon Graham Monday night told the Hartington City Council that he wants to see a 911 emergency calling system established and outlined some requirements he feels would be necessary for his office to handle that system. The city council indicated in the discussion that followed that they will work with Graham and the county to make the system a reality.
Graham said he asked to be placed on the agenda after he read an article in the Cedar County News which reported council members were not satisfied with progress being made on development of the 911 system. Graham said he is willing to take on the additional duties of operating the system provided he receives certain assurances from the city and the county.
“What we would like to see is for ambulance squad members to wear beepers, and we would like an extra person in our office during the day,” Graham said. “I’m not saying the city would have to pay the entire cost of an extra girl. We are short-handed in our office and we could use an extra person.”
Much of the discussion centered on the system of notifying emergency personnel after an emergency call is received. Graham said he feels his office would be able to handle the system if members of the Hartington Ambulance Squad were to wear pagers.
Currently, ambulance calls are received by the Cedars Nursing Home. The person taking the call contacts individual ambulance squad members by phone.
Graham said he feels his office would have difficulty handling the calling system.
“If we have to call around to get three people, there is some time involved,” Graham said. “If it comes in at night, we would only have one person in the office.”

HARTINGTON -The United States Achievement Academy announced recently that Cody Christensen has been named a United States National Award winner in Band.
This award is a prestigious honor very few students can ever hope to attain. In fact, the Academy recognizes less than 10 percent of all American high school students.
Cody, who attends Holy Trinity School, was nominated for this National Award by Pat Sedivy, a band director at the school. He will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook.
