1946: Downtown Hartington is getting some major updates

Feb. 28, 1946

HARTINGTON — The business district of Hartington is in the midst of marked improvement, with new construction, extensive remodeling and general redecorating giving the town a fresh and progressive appearance despite shortages of labor and materials.

Six new apartments now under construction above business houses will offer some relief from the present housing shortage and are expected to be ready for occupancy in the near future.

Frank Ferris, proprietor of Ferris and Sons Grocery and Market, has completed a 25 by 30 foot tile and concrete addition providing a modern meat processing plant, equipped with chilling and smoking rooms and up-to-date handling devices. Above the Ferris building, two five-room modern apartments are being constructed and are to be completed by April 1.

E. W. Berglund of the Berglund Motor Co. has erected a 25 by 66 cement block garage adjoining his former building, giving him a complete automotive establishment. The insulated and fireproof structure will house the showroom, parts department and offices, and plans call for a 38-foot rear addition later this spring.

Other automotive improvements include remodeling at the O. K. Motor Co., where Olof Klanderud has enlarged the parts room and office, installed modern shop equipment and improved heating facilities. Miller Motor Co. is also rearranging its parts department and refinishing its showroom.

A new enterprise, the J. W. Winterringer auto repair shop, has opened west of the Legion Pavilion in a rebuilt brick-faced structure.

Lon Wadkins has enlarged locker capacity in his meat market to 300 and remodeled the interior. Dr. W. E. Smith and P. H. Robinson have remodeled their building to provide modern dental and professional offices. The former Hartington National Bank building is being remodeled as the new home of The Cedar County News.

Three apartments are nearing completion above the People’s Store, while D. E. Ewing has converted part of the Globe building’s second floor into an apartment. Additional construction is planned by John Neu, who will erect a 30 by 80 cream tile building west of the Hartington Hatchery for his creamery and produce business.

Among other improvements, Hans J. Sorensen and son have enlarged their implement offices and parts rooms; J. J. Thielen has modernized his dry cleaning plant with new finishing and pressing equipment; and James Buchanan is doubling the size of the prescription department at Buchanan Drug, installing new cabinets, lighting and fixtures.

Taken together, these improvements reflect a spirit of steady advancement in Hartington’s business section as the community moves forward in the postwar period.
