Council clears way for school construction

RANDOLPH — Action by the Randolph City Council is paving the way for Randolph Public Schools to relocate and repurpose a 2,500-square-foot metal building as part of its upcoming construction project.

The council approved Ordinance No. 765, authorizing the sale of a city-owned lot to Randolph Public Schools for $2,000. The property sits south of the high school and west of the Lied Randolph Public Library.

Superintendent Daryl Schrunk previously confirmed the district intends to move the existing metal building — currently located south of the ag building — onto the newly purchased lot. The structure w ill first be used to store materials during construction tied to the district’s $8.75 million bond project approved by voters last May. That project includes construction of a new Career Technical Education building, upgrades at the elementary school and air conditioning in the high school gym.

Construction is expected to begin this spring and be completed before the start of the next school year. Once construction storage is no longer needed, the metal building will be repurposed for vehicle storage. The building had previously been used as a paint booth, but those needs will be incorporated into the new CTE facility.

Janssen Construction will level and grade the lot, and Aschoff Construction will pour concrete and reassemble the building at its new location. The structure will receive new siding and electrical service, while existing garage doors will be reused. The total cost of the relocation project is estimated at $130,000 and will be financed through the district’s special building fund.

Also Wednesday, the council introduced and adopted Ordinance No. 763 for the sale of property to Good Mojo Rentals LLC and Ordinance No. 764 for the sale of property to John Dickes.

The council also approved a temporary storage container permit, variance request and floodplain permit for Good Guys Construction at 101 S. Jennie St. The Planning Commission recommended approval of the variance with the stipulation that if the storage container remains on the property longer than one year, the request must return to the commission for further review.

Permits were approved for Randolph Public Schools at 110 N. Douglas, including a building permit and curb cut permit.

Other action included approval of Resolution No. 2026-03 for the Randolph Community Golf Course purchase of a greens mower; discussion on repairs at the city swimming pool and authorization to solicit bids; discussion on the next intersection project and approval to seek bids; and approval of Resolution No. 2026-04 authorizing representatives for the Summer Youth checking account at First State Bank.

The council accepted the resignation of Chad Winkelbauer from the Planning Commission and appointed Brent Billerbeck and Ed Burbach to fill open seats.

Council members also reviewed Wattier Ace Hardware bids for leasing mowers, approved a proposal from Complete Pest Elimination for citywide mosquito spraying, and approved Resolution No. 2026-05 regarding the possible purchase or replacement of a city fleet vehicle.

The next Randolph City Council meeting is planned for March 11 at City Hall.
