Feb. 20, 1991

RANDOLPH - The Nebraska Association of Elementary School Principals has awarded the “Making Education Come Alive for Children” certificate to Randolph Public Elementary School under the leadership of Gary Speer, principal.

The certificate stands for the positive contribution made toward children in the school district which makes a positive difference toward more effective education.

The association stated that they are making an effort to acknowledge as many quality ideas as they can in Nebraska schools.

“Our hope is not only that of recognition, but also the sharing of good ideas which may help all our schools improve,” President NAESP Dick Meyer said.

Beginning with the 1990-91 school year, students in grades one through six at the Randolph Elementary School have been given the opportunity to experience a foreign language, Spanish, on a weekly basis.

Emphasis behind this experience has been to familiarize students with vocabulary and culture that is consistent with their grade level and other subject matter. Activities have been integrated with other subjects whenever possible.

Students have been exposed to introductory conversational skills, have been able to have Spanish parties with emphasis on Spanish customs and have been given vocabulary experience in such areas as names, days of the week, months of the year, colors, numbers and counting, foods, body parts and more.

RANDOLPH - A group for school improvement to provide input from all groups involved with the educational process is being considered by the Randolph school board.

According to high school principal Ron Iles, the group would provide more parental contact in education by informing them of current trends and research in education.

Another goal of the group would be to provide a coalition working toward a better school, according to Iles. The group’s interests and goals would revolve around curriculum in education.

The group would involve secondary school parents, students, teachers and one or more members of the school board.
