1946: Randolph organizes VFW, Beltz elected Commander

RANDOLPH -Dwight Van Slyke has reenlisted in the navy for a period of two years, enlisting Feb. 16 at Omaha.

Chief Boatswain’s Mate Van Slyke who has served nine years in the navy is now at the Great Lakes training station awaiting reassignment.

RANDOLPH - A Veteran of Foreign Wars post has been organized in Randolph.

Ray Beltz was elected commander; Myrl Barnes, senior vice commander and Howard Gries, junior vice commander. Clarence Wurdinger was chosen chaplain and Kenneth Rosenbach was elected quartermaster.

Harry Hood of Omaha, extension director of the Department of Nebraska, Veterans of Foreign Wars was among those present for the installation ceremony.

RANDOLPH - More local veterans receiving discharges are Cpl. Albert Sommers, Cpl. Russell Brauer, Sgt. John Moes and Sgt. Robert Holmes.

RANDOLPH - Dale Rossbach was named first place winner in the Voice of Democracy contest, sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars post and auxiliary. Dale is the son of Pastor and Mrs. W. J. Rossbach.

RANDOLPH - Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Thelen moved Thursday to reside at Parkston, So. Dak., where Mr. Thelen has employment. He has been an employee at the Home Oil Co. about two years.

BELDEN - A fire on Saturday caused extensive damage to the Westrope Co. grocery and dry goods store at Belden.

Fire started in the basement of the building. The First National Bank, which adjoins the store sustained considerable smoke damage.

RANDOLPH - Proceeds of the 1966 Heart Fund drive in Randolph amounted to $321.00. Pastor W. J. Rossbach served as the local chairman, assisted by ladies of the St. John’s Lutheran congregation in the canvassing.
