OAKLAND — The Randolph Cardinal wrestling team had three wrestlers grab tickets to this week’s NSAA State Wrestling Championships at the CHI Health Center in Omaha.
One other Cardinal was just one match short of a pass to Omaha.
The Cards posted a team score of 79.5 which put them in sixth in the 23team District.
Burwell won the team race at the district meet with 196.5 points, Aquinas Catholic was second with 151 and Amherst was third.
Bentley Reimers (113), Cole Jensen (138) and Tate Brodersen qualified for the van ride south after placing in the top four spots at districts.
Reimers will be making his second straight trip to State. He earned the silver medal while Jensen and Brodersen each earned bronze.
“We are excited to get three wrestlers to state this year,” said Randolph wrestling mentor Mark Lech. “Bentley and Cole are returning qualifiers and Bentley placed sixth, so they had goals set to get back to Omaha and do even better this year.
Reimers has compiled a great season and wants to see that continue in Omaha, Coach Lech said.
“Bentley has wrestled well all year and by making the district finals set himself up for a good first-round draw at State. Cole has been our leader all year and our captain. He always puts forth maximum effort in both practices and at meets. He showed the grit to push back through the wrestle-back rounds to qualify again this year.
Brodersen will be making his first appearance at State. Lech was not surprised to see him advance to Omaha.
“Tate is our newest qualifier and had an excellent year and continued that at districts. He didn’t let the semifinals loss get him down and wrestled a great third-place match,” he said.
Reimers had his way with his first two opponents at the district meet, pinning them both, one in 1:42 and one at the 5:39 mark of the bout. He dropped a technical fall decision in the finals to Tristan Davis of Aquinas Catholic to end up second.
Jensen stuck his first three opponents in the meet, the first two in the opening round and the third over Landon Stephen of North Central in 3:31.
He ran into Drew Dawe of Burwell, who exited the tournament with a 40-4 record, and was pinned before rebounding to win his consolation semifinals match with a narrow, 2-0 decision then defeated Kolby Nash of Weeping Water by a major decision for his third-place medal and his trip back to Omaha.
Brodersen opened his district meet with a pin then earned a technical fall over Aidan Isom of Tri County Northeast.
He was pinned in the championship semifinals but came back with a pin and a major decision in semis and finals of the consolation bracket for his third-place medal and first trip south.
Elijah Bermel (157) won his opening match, dropped a quarterfinals match, then won two bouts in the consolations to get to the doorstep of a trip to Omaha, but was pinned by an Amherst wrestler in the consolation semifinals.
The Class D State Tournament will get underway at 3 p.m. on Feb. 19 at the CHI Health Center and will continue through Feb. 21.
“The three we’re taking to state have led us in wins all this year,” Lech said. “We’re looking forward to a competitive state tournament.
