1991: Dr. Chace honored with lifetime membership

LAUREL - Craig Hanson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Hanson of Concord, left Friday, Feb. 15, for Australia.

He and four other students at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln were chosen to attend a semester of schooling at Lismore University.

LAUREL - The Laurel-Concord Quiz Bowl team of Larry Osborne, Matt Kessinger and Greg Ward, defeated the team from Osmond last Monday, Feb. 18, and advances to the third round action against Clarkson Feb. 22 at 9:15 a.m. on KNEN.

Other members of the team are Scott Carlson, Jeremy Quist, Chad Hank and Keith Schutte.

The Laurel-Concord Quiz Bowl team defeated the defending champion Stanton in the first round on Feb. 5. The Wagon Wheel of Laurel is the quiz bowl team sponsor.

LAUREL - Dr. W.R. Chace of Laurel was awarded a life membership to the Nebraska Veterinary Medical Association at their 94th annual convention in Kearney recently.

Retiring president Paul Foy of Ogallala presided at the business meeting and presented the awards.

Dr. Ted Evans, a practitioner from Tecumseh, assumed the presidency of the association.

LAUREL — League bowlers turned in several strong performances during action Feb. 17-18 at Laurel.

In the Sunday Night Couples Early League, Wacker-Twohig and Hintz-Johnson each posted 22-14 records to share the top spot for the week. Hintz-Johnson also claimed top team honors with a 702 game and 2,059 series. Jerry Johnson rolled the high men’s game of 214 and a 616 series, while Janet Vanderheiden led the women with a 512 series. Pat Malcom added a 202 game. Splits were converted by Cheri Hintz (5-6-10), Jerry Johnson (6-7-9-10) and Renee Saunders (3-7-10).

In the Late League, Hot Rods and Sandbaggers both finished 2210, with Ottomatics close behind at 21-11.

Hot Rods posted the high team game at 691, while Ottomatics rolled a 1,960 series. Dave Dunn led individuals with a 202 game and 587 series. Barbara Pigg had a 179 game and Loren Messerschmidt added a 201. Splits were picked up by Kent Pigg (5-7), Kim Ellyson (59-10), Regg Lubberstedt (7-8) and Scott Pigg (5-8-10).

On Monday Night Ladies, Gary’s Food Town and Urwiler Oil shared the lead at 17-7. Judi Harrington fired a 223 to take high game honors, while Nancy Sherman led series scores with a 522.

Salmon Well recorded the top team game at 861, and Saloon claimed high team series with a 2,476. Zelma Juhlin converted the 5-7 and 4-5-7 splits.

In Classic League play, Saloon moved to 20-12 and dominated team categories with a 1,027 high game and 2,827 series.

Gary Newton rolled the night’s top game with a 267, while Brad Penlerick led the series scoring at 633. Mike Jacobsen added a 259 game and 611 series as bowlers continued to post impressive lateseason numbers.

Feb. 13, 1991

COLERIDGE - Stephen Kalin announced this week that he would hold a public sale of live stock and farm equipment on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 25. He has not been able to rent a farm for the coming season and has decided to dispose of his property.

The farm is located 1¼ miles west on the Pearl Creek road and ¼ mile north. Ed Tromble and F. J. Peitz will be the auctioneers and the Coleridge National Bank clerk. The sale is to start at 12 o’clock. A lunch wagon will be on hand and free coffee will be served in the afternoon.

Nineteen head of cattle will be offered. Four cows are now giving milk and five will be fresh soon. A two-year-old Black Angus bull, two yearling heifer calves, two calves six months old and five bucket calves. A group of 14 brood sows, due to farrow in March, will be offered.
