1996: Trojans claim their first MidState basketball title

Feb. 21, 1996

HARTINGTON — Cedar Catholic claimed the Mid-State Conference boys’ basketball title Friday with a thrilling 79-73 win over Norfolk Catholic.

There was no lack of drama in the contest.

Two Mike Juracek free throws completed a Norfolk Catholic comeback to knot the game at 6464 with 10 seconds left in the contest. Cedar Coach Bob Geary then attempted to call a timeout that went unnoticed by his players. Cedar drove up court and Paul Wintz took a 15-foot jump shot to win the game, but the ball missed its mark by a fraction, bouncing away and sending Cedar to overtime.

The final frenzied minutes of regulation were played with several stellar defensive plays by both teams.

The teams traded baskets in the first half of overtime. Ryan Zimmer’s 22-foot three-pointer broke the game open and from there on out, Cedar stayed in front with its free throw shooting. Zimmer’s shot was just what the team needed, Geary said, because Craig Wortmann and Phil Steffen both fouled out of the contest earlier.

“Both teams played with a great deal of intensity and determination Friday,” Geary said. “I can’t say enough about the way the kids played on both ends of the floor.”

This is the first year Cedar has competed in the MidState Conference. Cedar ends the regular season in sole possession of first place with a 6-1 conference record and a 14-7 overall record. Norfolk Catholic ends the regular season with a 13-8 overall record and 4-3 in the conference.

“Winning the conference is a real tribute to the determination these kids showed this year,” Geary said. “They have pulled together as a team as well as any team I have had. Hopefully, we can ride this momentum into a very tough district.”

HARTINGTON — Trans-Canada Corp. confirmed last week its plan to build a $2.1 billion pipeline to ship petroleum through Cedar County to U.S. refineries.

“Construction is proposed to begin in late 2007,” Kvisle said, “with commercial operations scheduled to commence by the fourth quarter of 2009.”
