Coleridge to host tornado spotter session

COLERIDGE — After going fully virtual last year due to staffing shortages, the National Weather Service is once again offering in-person severe storm spotter training — including a session right here in northeast Nebraska.

Area residents will have the opportunity to attend a free storm spotter training course on March 16 at the Coleridge Community Center from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The session is open to the public and pre-registration is not required to attend.

The training, offered in collaboration with local emergency management officials, is designed to help participants better recognize and report severe weather as storm season approaches. Attendees will learn to identify key storm features, understand safety practices near severe storms and properly relay critical weather information to authorities.

Another northeast Nebraska session will be held March 3 at Northeast Community College from 6 to 7 p.m.

These sessions are free and open to all ages.

Organizers encourage anyone with an interest in weather — from farmers and first responders to students and community volunteers — to attend and help strengthen severe weather awareness across the region.

Several live virtual sessions will also be offered this spring, along with a recorded version of the training for those unable to attend in person. Details on virtual registration will be announced soon.
