Wildcats drop a pair of L&C contests
WYNOT - The Hartington-Newcastle boys basketball squad dropped a pair of road contests to fall to 9-12 on the season as they narrowed the regular season down to just one final game.
Wynot defeated the Wildcats 65-45 on Feb. 13 after Wausa defeated HNS 50-43 on Feb. 10.
Hartington-Newcastle couldn’t shake off a shaky start against the Blue Devils.
Wynot opened the game with a 19-10 lead and extended it to 37-14 by the intermission, The ‘Cats heated up a little in the second half and outscored Wynot in the fourth quarter 1815, but the damage was already done and HNS fell by the 65-45 final score.
Austin Sudbeck was the Wildcat offense in the game, pouring in 33 points on the night and made it a double-double after grabbing 12 missed shots.
Carter Kelly recorded eight rebounds and Mason Krause yanked down five.
Keatyn Arens dished out three assists. A slow start against the Vikings also proved to be too big of a hole for the ‘Cats to get out of although they made the game very close.
After trailing 27-13 at the half, Hartington-Newcastle got something going in the third frame and took eight points off of the deficit to get to within six at the third rest stop, 35-29.
Wausa responded in the final eight minutes and held on for the 50-43 win.
Sudbeck had the hot hand again with 18 points, Brayden Lammers added nine and Will Feilmeier and Krause each chipped in five.
Krause pulled down eight boards while Sudbeck grabbed six.
Lammers also contributed three steals. Hartington-Newcastle will complete its regular season slate Feb. 20 at Creighton before heading into subdistricts.
