CLEARWATER — The Cedar Catholic Trojan basketball team seems to be hitting its stride at just the right time after going 3-0 over the past week and has won five of its last six games.
The Trojans sandwiched a couple of non-conference wins over Summerland, 68-37, and Elkhorn Valley, 57-27, around a 44-34 Mid State Conference win over Battle Creek.
Cedar Catholic jumped on the Bobcats Feb. 13 and led the game wire-towire on the way to the big win.
At Clearwater, the Trojans led by 15 at the half and increased the lead to 22 after the third frame then coasted to the 31-point victory.
Gavin Klug had a great game as he exploded for 30 points on the night.
Mason Baller added 16 and Aaron Wortmann tossed in nine.
Baller also grabbed five rebounds, Wortmann and Micah Cattau gathered in four missed shots each.
Breiton Whitmire handed out six assists, Baller recorded five and Klug swiped four steals.
The game against the Braves was a typical Mid State Conference game in that it was a defensive battle.
Klug led the Cedar offense again with 14 points, Kighter Wortmann added nine and Baller recorded eight.
Klug, Aaron Wortmann and Jared Rutar each pulled down five rebounds, Ryan Hoebelheinrich corralled four missed shots.
Whitmire registered four assists while Cattau and Kighter Wortmann each posted three steals.
The Cedar Catholic defense was on display in the game with the Falcons played at Werner Activities Center.
The Trojans grounded the Falcon offense, holding them in single digits in each quarter.
After Cedar grabbed a 12-9 lead at the end of the first period, the Trojans held Elkhorn Valley to just four points in the second frame.
Meanwhile, the Cedar Catholic offense put up 21 points in the second to take a 33-13 lead into the halftime locker room.
Klug led a fairly balanced offensive attack for the Trojans with 15 points.
Baller added 11, Aaron Wortmann contributed nine while Cattau and Whitmire tacked on six apiece.
Baller also took down six rebounds and handed out six assists.
Cedar Catholic will finish the regular season with a home date with Norfolk Catholic on Feb. 20.
