COLUMBUS - The Randolph Lady Cardinals traveled to Columbus Feb. 6 and 7 for the B-2 District Girls Wrestling Tournament at Lakeview High School on the north end of town.
All but one of the four Lady Cards participating won at least two matches in the tournament but all witnessed their season come to an end at the meet’s conclusion.
Battle Creek won the team title as the Bravettes accumulated 163 points in the two-day tournament, Lakeview was second with 142.5 points and Ord was third with 114.5.
Randolph came in at 23rd in the team standings scoring 22 points in the 37-team event.
Peyton Thelen had a good tournament. Winning three straight bouts after dropping her opening match of the meet at 130 pounds.
After dropping a match to a Falls City wrestler, Thelen used a pair of pins and a 10-3 decision over Claire Kester of Summerland to get to the “heartbreak” round where she was pinned by Payton Becker of Boone Central to end her season.
Gracie Wortman at 135 won her first two matches by fall over Krystal Fickenscher of Axtell at the 4:47 mark and Peyton Melnick of Ord in 3:37.
Unfortunately back-to-back falls to Lilly Mefford of Battle Creek and Di Maria of Aurora left her a match short of a ticket to Omaha.
Mabel Ngebeh won her first match, lost her second then won her third with a pin over Madison Frase of Kenesaw in just 45 seconds before being eliminated by Ava Dunse of Alma.
Maddy Aulner also competed at the district meet for Randolph and the entire season.
The State Wrestling Tournament is set for the CHI Health Center in Omaha with the tournament getting underway Feb. 17 and 18.
