Cardinals finish fourth in L&C Conference Tourney

WINNEBAGO - The Randolph Cardinal basketball team keeps making headway into uncharted waters, at least recently, as the Cards advanced to the Lewis & Clark Conference semifinals where they took on Wausa.

The Vikings cruised past the Redbirds 47-33 and Randolph hosted a consolation game with Wynot which the Blue Devils won 78-51.

The game with Wynot was played on Feb. 7 and Wynot jumped on the Cardinals early, leading after the first quarter, 22-10.

The Blue Devils added 13 points to the advantage by the intermission before the Cards came to life in the second half, but the damag e was already done.

Brecken Shearer had a solid night on the hardwood with 15 points, Ryan Engel added 11 and Kody Junck tossed in nine.

In the semifinals against Wausa played in Winnebago on Feb. 6, both teams started out cold as the teams headed to the second frame with the Vikings clinging to a 5-3 lead.

The Cards continued to have trouble scoring the basketball in the second quarter, putting up five points and the teams went to the halftime locker room with the Vikings up 20-8.

Randolph nibbled a point off the advantage in the third period, but the Vikings put the final nail in the proverbial coffin in the fourth, outscoring the Cards 15-12 to post the 47-33 final score.

Engel had a great night with 19 points, Luke Harder tossed in six and Trindan Ziems chipped in with five.

The Cardinals will travel to Elgin on Feb. 12 to take on Elgin Public/ Pope John before hosting Stuart on Feb. 13.

Randolph will close out the regular season at home against Boyd County on Feb. 19.
