Feb. 8, 1951

COLERIDGE - The Coleridge High School cage team, which wasn’t considered in the running, won the third place trophy in the Cedar county basketball tournament by downing Laurel 49 to 46, after giving Hartington a good scare before losing 43 to 46 in the semi-final round.

Harold Dirks and Wayne Jordan, Coleridge sparkplugs, added to the local team’s laurels by winning unanimous berths on the all-tournament team selected by the coaches. Jordan was further honored by winning the special sportsmanship award certificate.

Holy Trinity won the tournament, outclassing Hartington 44 to 27 in the finals. The auditorium was jammed with 1400 people for the final two contests.

Giving the county fans plenty of thrills in all three of their games, the Bulldogs clipped Laurel in a hectic overtime game 49-46 in which Wayne Jordan sunk a field goal in the final seconds of overtime to widen the local team’s scant one point lead.

Wayne Jordan contributed four points and Cliff Hinrichs three in the overtime period as the Bulldogs outscored their opponents 7-4.

Harold Dirks led the Coleridge team with 16 points, while Jordan ended up with 14. Wiedenfeld of Laurel was the game’s high scorer with 17 points.
