LAUREL - Fire discovered near the midnight hour last Saturday completely destroyed the large barn at the Evan Peterson home south of this city. When discovered the flames were beyond control rolling over the roof of the building and Mr. Peterson and the first neighbors to arrive were unable to get into the flaming building and save any of the livestock or equipment.
Four cows and three calves were in the barn and were burned to death, so rapidly did the flames spread. Fire departments from Laurel and Wayne were soon on the job to protect surrounding property and were successful in that work.
It is thought that the fire started from a tank heater close by which threw sparks into protective covering about the tank and this in turn ignited the barn.
The farm is owned by the mother of Mr. Peterson and she carried no insurance on the building and Mr. Peterson had none on the contents.
