Wynot boys top Randolph for third-place honors

RANDOLPH —The Wynot Blue Devils rolled over the Randolph Cardinals in the consolation game of the Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament Saturday 78-51.

Ten players would enter the scorebook for the Blue Devils lead by 20 points from Devin Brummer who nailed six three pointers to lead all scorers. Braylon Hans also hit double figures with 12 points and Wynot got 10 points each from Nixen Heimes and Kotner Koch.

Randolph was led by Brecken Shearer with 15 points and Ryan Engel with 11. Wynot come out of the gate firing in the opening quarter. Justin Heimes led the charge with seven points in the period and Devin Brummer, Cash Lenzen and Kotner Koch all drained three pointers as the Blue Devils opened with a 22-10 run. Randolph was led in the quarter by Ryan Engel who hit a pair of threes.

The second quarter it was more of the same. Braylon Hans poured in seven points for the Blue Devils, Kotner Koch added five points and Brummer hit his second trey of the night as a 21-8 run put the visiting Blue Devils in command leading 43-18 at halftime. Randolph was led by a basket plus one each from Brecken Shearer and Kody Junck.

Randolph showed some life in the third quarter as they got five points from Jaylen Junck, four points by Koby Junck and a three pointer each from Ryan Engel and Brecken Shearer. Wynot however, kept the pressure on as Devin Brummer drained three more treys, Braylon Hans hit for five points and Nixen Heimes hit a pair of layups as the Blue Devils lead continued to grow to 61-33.

The two teams traded baskets in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals would try to stage a mini rally with six points from Ryan Engel, five points by Adrian Samano and four points each from Kody Junck and Brecken Shearer. Wynot continued to stay hot from long range. Lane Heimes connected twice from distance as Brummer hit his sixth three pointer of the game and Carter Hans also connected from behind the arc as the Blue Devils finished off the Cardinals 78-51.

WINNEBAGO — The Wynot Blue Devils and the Winnebago Indians met at Winnebago on Friday night in second round action of the Lewis and Clark Tournament. Winnebago would pull away in the second and third quarters to down the Blue Devils by a final of 52-39 and advanced to play Wausa at Wayne State College on Monday with the conference championship on the line.

Devin Brummer once again carried the load for the Blue Devils with his 18 points. Winnebago’s Preston Blackhawk had a big night hitting for a game high 22 points. Ashton LaPointe contributed 16 points to the Indians win.

Ashton LaPointe had eight of Winnebago’s 10 first quarter points. Wynot’s Devin Brummer had seven points in the opening frame and Braylon Hans and Lane Heimes each hit a bucket as the Blue Devils held and early 12-10 lead.

In the second quarter the Indians would go on a 16-6 run powered by Preston Blackhawks’ nine point effort and a trey from D.J. LaPointe. Lone buckets by Justin Heimes, Nixen Heimes and Kotner Koch was all the offense Wynot could muster as they fell behind 26-18 at halftime.

Wynot got a pair of three pointers by Brummer and a basket each from Kotner Koch and Cash Lenzen. Winnebago however kept the pressure on with six more points from Preston Blackhawk, four points by Ashton LaPointe and another three pointer from D.J. Lapointe as they increased their lead to 41-30 after three periods of play.

Seven more points from the Blackhawks and a trey by Adrian LaPointe kept Winnebago rolling in the fourth quarter. Wynot got a 3-pointer by Lane Heimes and a bucket each from Justin Heimes and Nixen Heimes, but this game was decided earlier as Winnebago earned the win by a 52-39 margin.

Hartington-Newcastle’s Ashton Wakeley signed a letter of intent to play football for the University of Sioux Falls. His parents Raquel and Brian Humphries, along with coaches Russ Fuller and Mike Johnson took part in the ceremony.
Cedar Catholic’s Sam Wiebelhaus with his mom Sarah Wiebelhaus. Sam signed a letter of intent to play football for Concordia University.
Cedar Catholic’s Breiton Whitmire signed a letter of intent to play both baseball and football for Mounty Marty University. His parents, Bridget and Don Whitmire took part in the signing ceremony.
