Lady Cards bounced from L&C Tournament

OSMOND - The Randolph Lady Cardinal basketball team dropped three games over the past week including a couple of games in the Lewis & Clark Conference Tournament which ended the Lady Cards’ stay in the event.

Randolph was defeated by Osmond in Osmond in a consolation game of the tournament played on Feb. 2, 46-29 after dropping the tournament opener to Walthill on Jan. 31, 62-36.

Earlier in the week the Lady Redbirds dropped a regular season conference date with Wynot 62-15 in a game played on Jan. 27 in Wynot.

In the game with the Lady Tigers, neither team came out of the gate very quickly as the first quarter ended with Osmond clinging to a 5-3 lead.

The game heated up some in the second frame with Osmond taking a 15-10 lead into the halftime locker room.

Both teams scored more in the third period than they had accomplished the entire first half but unfortunately for the Lady Cards, Osmond scored seven more points and the teams entered the final stanza with the Lady Tigers in front 37-25.

Abbigail Backer and Lilly Kuchta accounted for 27 of the Lady Cardinals’ 29 points led by Backer’s 14. Kuchta added 13 and Aniston Schmidt knocked down a couple of free throws.

In the first round of the tournament against the Lady Blujays, the Lady Cards fell behind early before closing out the first frame down by 10 points, 16-6.

Randolph nibbled into the lead in the second but Walthill erupted for 20 third-quarter points to put the game away.

Backer had the hot hand again on the night with 16 points. Kuchta and Delayne Thelen each tossed in six. Kuchta and Backer each cleaned the glass for eight rebounds, Olivia Rayford gathered in seven missed shots.

Kuchta finished a busy night with five assists and five steals.

Wynot led from wire-to-wire on the way to the 62-15 win.

Backer posted nine points in the game and Braylee Kelly contributed three.

The schedule is quickly winding down for the Lady Cardinals.

They are scheduled to take on Elgin Public/Pope John on the road Feb. 12 before hosting Stuart on Feb. 13.
