Dry January ends with Arctic chill after early warm spell

HARTINGTON — January 2026 brought a wide range of temperatures to Hartington, with spring-like highs early in the month giving way to bitter cold as the month wore on.

The warmest day came on Jan. 7, when the mercury climbed to a balmy 55 degrees. In stark contrast, the coldest reading occurred Jan. 23, when temperatures plunged to a frigid -12 degrees—the coldest low of the month and the only subzero high, registering just -1 degree that day.

Temperatures were above normal for the first two weeks of the month, frequently reaching into the 40s and 50s. However, starting mid-month, a cold snap settled in. Highs on many days between Jan. 17 and 31 hovered in the teens and 20s, with lows often dipping below zero.

Precipitation was sparse, totaling just 0.57 inches for the entire month. Notable moisture was recorded on Jan. 10, which brought 0.26 inches, and Jan. 31, with 0.07 inches. Only a few other days posted measurable amounts.
