HARTINGTON — The Cedar Catholic Trojans dropped a couple of games over the past week by six points total including a nonconference contest with Plainview at the Monsignor Werner Activities Center on Jan. 27, 63-60, and a 47-44 loss on the road to Ponca in Mid State Conference action.
In the loss to the Pirates, Cedar Catholic jumped out to a 12-2 lead at the end of the first frame but Plainview took five points off the advantage in the second quarter and the teams went to the halftime locker room with the Trojans in front, 25-20.
By the end of the third, the score was tied 40-40 and the Pirates scored three more points than the Trojans and the final score was set.
Three Cedar players scored in double digits on the night, paced by Gavin Klug who poured in 18.
Mason Baller added 14 and Aaron Wortmann tossed in 10.
Micah Cattau posted six rebounds and Baller handed out six assists.
Against the Indians, Ponca took a 17-14 lead at the end of the first but the Trojans responded to take a 25-19 advantage by the intermission. Cedar Catholic added three points in the third but Ponca outscored the Trojans 18-6 in the final stanza to take the lead and the game.
Aaron Wortmann scored 18 points for Cedar Catholic with Baller chipping in nine and Klug adding seven.
Baller yanked down eight rebounds, Klug contributed three assists.
Cedar was set to open action in the Mid State Conference Tournament on Feb. 3 taking on Pierce in Crofton.
The winner of that game will play in the semifinals at Boone Central in Albion on Feb 6.
The championship is set for Feb. 7 at Northeast Community College in Norfolk.
