LINCOLN — The Hartington-Newcastle Wildcat boys bowling team turned in a strong performance at the Class B-i district tournament last week, earning runner-up honors and punching their ticket to the state competition.
Competing at Sun Valley Lanes, the Wildcats battled through traditional games and baker play against a deep field that included host school Lincoln Pius X High School.
A highlight of the day came from Kayne Gratzfeld, who rolled a school-record 648 series over three games, giving Hartington-Newcastle a major boost in team scoring and setting a new standard for the program.
In baker competition, the Wildcats advanced with a 3-0 sweep over Thurston-Cuming County High School to move into the championship round, where they ultimately secured the district runner-up spot to advance to State.
Two HNS bowlers also qualified for State as individuals. Kayne Gratzefeld and Maddux Ulrich will now compete on Monday, Feb. 9 in the State event at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln.
