Lady Devils earn a close OT win over Ponca girls

WYNOT — The Wynot Blue Devils and Ponca Lady Indians battled through a tight contest Thursday, with Wynot surviving overtime for a 41-37 win.

Wynot controlled much of the first half, but Ponca rallied after the break to force the extra period before the Blue Devils finished the job.

Ponca’s Elsie Keller led all scorers with 17 points. Wynot countered with double-figure efforts from Kenna Oligmueller (13) and Addison Sharpe (12).

Wynot opened the game by working inside, as Oligmueller scored seven points in the paint and Sharpe knocked down a threepointer to help the Blue Devils to a 9-5 firstquarter lead. Ponca answered with baskets from Keller and Jaelen Templeman.

Offense was hard to come by in the second quarter, with both teams scoring just five points.

Wynot carried a 14-11 lead into halftime.

The pace picked up in the third quarter as Ponca went on a 17-12 run. Keller poured in nine points during the surge, while Emerson Ehlers added five, giving Ponca a 28-26 advantage entering the final period.

Wynot stayed within reach behind four points from Sharpe and a three-pointer by Jaylyn Geisen. In the fourth quarter, Sharpe scored twice and Jaylin Geisen added a basket for Wynot. Ponca got baskets from Emerson Ehlers, Ava Brown and Elsie Ehlers.

Oligmueller calmly sank two free throws late to tie the game at 33-33 and send it to overtime.

Wynot’s defense took over in the extra session, limiting Ponca to three free throws while the Blue Devils scored six points to secure the 41-37 victory.

The Randolph girls ran into a buzzsaw on the road Tuesday night. Facing a hot-shooting Wynot squad, the Lady Cardinals were held to single-digit scoring in every quarter as the Blue Devils rolled to a 62-15 win Wynot wasted no time taking control, racing to a 26-3 first-quarter lead behind a dominant start from Jaylin Geisen. Geisen sliced through the defense and knocked down a pair of three-pointers while piling up 16 points in the opening frame. Haley Wieseler added three baskets as Randolph managed only free throws early.

The Blue Devils kept the pressure on in the second quarter, building a 39-10 halftime cushion with balanced scoring. Kenna Oligmueller scored twice inside, Taylor Pinkelman and Geisen added layups, and Addison Sharpe connected from long range. Abbigail Backer provided a spark for Randolph with two threepointers in the period.

Backer accounted for Randolph’s only field goal in the third quarter. Wynot answered with more outside shots from Geisen and Sharpe, while Oligmueller, Wieseler and Jacy Nelson all contributed as the lead swelled to 54-14.

Reserves played much of the fourth frame as Wynot improved to 10-8. Randolph fell to 1-14. Geisen led all scorers with 23 points, followed by Wieseler with 12 and Sharpe with 10.
