Ponca edges out Blue Devils in thriller

WYNOT — The Wynot Blue Devils and Ponca Indians squared off in a packed gym Thursday night in Lewis and Clark Conference action. The teams played evenly throughout, with Wynot holding the edge most of the way until Ponca took control in the closing minutes to pull out a 53-51 victory.

Ponca was led by Connor Stewart with 12 points and Gannon Pfister with 10. Pierce Ehlers just missed double figures with nine.

Wynot got a game-high 14 points from Killian Steinhaus. Justin Heimes and Devin Brummer added 10 points apiece.

The teams traded baskets in the opening quarter. Brummer, Heimes and Kotner Koch each knocked down 3-pointers for Wynot. Ponca answered with five points from Pierce Pfister and three each from Caden Cleveland and Michenon Petersen as the score stood tied at 15-15 after one.

Brummer poured in eight secondquarter points for the Blue Devils, and Steinhaus beat the buzzer with a trey. Ponca stayed close behind eight points from Gannon Pfister, but Wynot carried a 30-25 lead into halftime.

The game remained tight in the third quarter. Steinhaus drilled a pair of 3-pointers, and Nixen Heimes added an offensive putback for Wynot. Ponca responded with two buckets from Connor Pfister and a layup by Kyan Biyne. Wynot held a slim 38-35 advantage heading into the fourth.

Wynot maintained the lead until the three-minute mark of the final quarter behind a 3-pointer from Koch and a field goal from Lane Heimes.

Ponca moved in front on 3-pointers by Kyran Bryne and Mickenon Petersen. Free throws by Connor Pfister gave the Indians a two-point lead with 1.2 seconds left. Brummer’s midcourt 3-pointer came after the buzzer, allowing Ponca to escape with the 53-51 win.

Wynot hosted the Randolph boys in conference basketball action on Tuesday night. The game was rough and tumble as between the two teams 65 foul shot were taken. The Blue Devils would open up a lead in the second and third quarters and made it stand up to the end as they earned the 59-39 win, Wynot’s season mark improved to 9-8 while the Cardinals fell to 9-5.

Devin Brummer continues to stroke the long ball as he carried the load in the first half. The sharp shooting guard hit 5 times from distance and went on to total a game high 23 points. Killian Steinhaus took over for the home team in the second half hitting twice from three point land and finishing with a 10 point effort.

Randolph got double scoring from Ryan Engel and Adrian Samano with 14 and 12 points respectively.

The game was tight in the early going. Randolph got a trey by Breacken Shearer and a basket plus one each from Logan Linemann and Ryan Engel. Devin Brummer answered for the Blue Devils hitting four three pointers to give the Blue Devils a 13-12 lead at the end on the opening quarter.

The Cardinals decided to cool Brummer off by fouling him but he went 7 for 8 from the charity stripe. Braylon Hans chipped in a bucket plus one and Wynot went on a 20-11 run. The Cardinals got a basket each from Ryan Engel and Adrian Samaro, but fell behind 32-18 at halftime.

In the third quarter for Wynot a basket each from Cash Lenzen, Kotner Koch and Killian Steinhaus. Randoph got all six of their points from Ryan Engel and fell further behind trailing 43-24 going into the fourth quarter.

In the final quarter Randolph tried to rally from the free throw line. The Cardinals would hit 11 of 14 charity tosses but it did them no good as Wynot’s Killian Stienhaus hit for eight points and a bucket each by Kason and Kingston Hans maintained the Blue Devils lead at 59-39.
