Cards’ wrestling season heads into the final stretch

HOMER - The Randolph Cardinal wrestling team is in the middle of the busiest part of the 2025-26 season as the Cardinal wrestlers competed in the Lewis & Clark Conference Duals Tournament on Jan. 23 and wrestled at the Oakland-Craig Invitational on Jan. 25 after grabbing third in the conference duals.

In the Oakland-Craig Invitational which included a girls tournament, the team scores were reported together with the Cardinals finishing ninth in the total team standings and seventh in the boys.

Westwood out of Sloan, Iowa came away with the boys’ title with 185.5 points, Pender was second with 145.5 and West Point-Beemer was third with 136.5.

The Cardinals posted 91 points to finish between Tri County Northeast and North Bend Central which both completed the day with 96 and Winnebago which finished with 90.

The Redbirds parlayed a first, a second and two thirds into the 91-point total.

Cole Jensen improved to 34-7 to bring home a gold medal after pinning his first three opponents and hanging on for a 4-3 decision over Kolt Smith of Pender for the 138-pound title.

Bentley Reimers lost just his second match of the year at 113, using a pin, a couple of technical falls before falling to Brady Burton of Westwood in the finals by technical fall, 16-0.

Tate Brodersen bumped his record to 32-8 after losing a bout at 150 pounds and winding up third.

Brodersen dropped his opening match of the day, after receiving a first-round bye, to Sender Escobar of Omaha Buena Vista by major decision, 13-5.

Brodersen would avenge the loss later in the tournament.

After the loss, he used a pin and a medical forfeit to find himself in a bout with Escobar again.

Brodersen took care of his business with a pin over Escobar in the thirdplace match at the 2:02 mark of the bout.

Elijah Bermel also placed third in his weight class.

He won his first match by fall then ran into a buzzsaw from Westwood, getting pinned early.

He responded with a win and another pin to bring the bronze medal back to Randolph.

In the L&C Conference Duals, the Cards ended up third overall with a 4-2 record for the day.

Randolph edged Winside 27-26 in the Cardinals opening match in the event, then defeated Osmond-Wausa 33-24.

Tri County Northeast slipped past the Redbirds 24-22 before Randolph answered with a 36-18 win over Homer.

Creighton defeated the Cards 38-30 in round five and Randolph took care of Winnebago in round seven 35-24.

The Cards were set to host Laurel- Concord-Coleridge in a Parent’s Night dual on Jan. 29 before heading to Norfolk for the Norfolk Catholic Invitational on Jan. 31. Then hit the wakefield Invitational on Feb. 7.
