1941: Meyer buys station from Langferman

Jan. 30, 1941

HARTINGTON - Frank Meyer and Herman Becker will take possession of Henry’s service station at the northwest edge of the city Saturday, Feb. 1.

They purchased the station from Henry Langferman a month ago. Langferman has announced no future plans.

Mr. and Mrs. Meyer and family have moved from a farm near here into the house recently vacated by Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Sinkey. Becker will reside with Meyers.

HARTINGTON - A crew of local bowlers has forwarded registrations for entry into the national bowling tournament to be held in St. Paul, Minn., soon. The meet is sponsored by the American Bowling Congress of which the Hartington Bowling club is a member. Representing Hartington will be H. H. “Jelly” Johnson, F. E. Hirschman, Paul H. Lammers, Frederic Stevens, Charles Reeck and Lloyd Lynde.

HARTINGTON - Workmen are rebuilding a 21x 40-foot structure on East Main street, owned by the Globe Clothing company, formerly occupied for 40 years by the Lydick harness shop. Will Ewing is in charge. The building is expected to be completed by March 1.

HARTINGTON - Two youths, both recent enlistments in military service, are here on short furloughs. Ben Bieg, 18, arrived Tuesday from Oakland, Calif., where he is in the coast guard service on the cutter Shoshone.

He is visiting his mother, Mrs. C. R. Bieg. Bieg joined the service in June. Don Noecker, 18, who joined the navy in December and has been stationed at the Great Lakes training station near Chicago, arrived Sunday for a week’s vacation.

HARTINGTON - Mrs. Julian H. Gist of Lincoln, mother of Jean and Jeannette Gist, Hartington Public School teachers, will leave Saturday for Panama City in the Canal Zone to be near her husband, Lieut.-Colonel Gist, a United States army officer stationed there.

Mrs. Gist will be accompanied by another daughter, Aloha, a high school senior. Lieut.-Colonel Gist has been stationed in Panama since Sept. 1.

HARTINGTON - Ernest W. Berglund, implement dealer, was elected 1941 president of the Hartington senior chamber of commerce at a meeting of the board of directors Monday night. He succeeds Marvin Sorensen.

The directors, who made preliminary plans for considerable activity during the coming year, elected Frank Ferris, vice president; Fred R. Zimmer, secretary; and M. A. Olson, treasurer.

A membership campaign will be launched immediately among Hartington business and professional men, and the directors decided to outline a definite program to present to the members

HARTINGTON - The junior chamber of commerce here has gone on record urging a revamp of the state fair setup in Lincoln. A bill in the unicameral legislature, for the change, is being propelled by the state Jaycee group.

HARTINGTON - Miss Helen Berglund, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Berglund, a student nurse in St. Vincent’s hospital in Sioux City, was among 16 girls receiving caps at a ceremony in St. Vincent’s chapel Friday evening.

At the end of the probation period, the girls are permitted to continue their nurse’s training if they pass their studies and have qualifications for becoming a nurse and at that time they receive their caps. Mr. and Mrs. Berglund attended the ceremony.
