HARTINGTON — Including two games from last week, the Cedar Catholic Trojan basketball team found itself in the middle of a four-game streak in the wrong direction.
The Trojans righted the ship on Jan. 24 with a 57-47 win over Guardian Angels Central Catholic at the Monsignor Werner Activities Center.
Earlier in the week Cedar Catholic dropped a Mid State Conference contest to Wayne 51-47 and were soundly beaten on the road in O’Neill by the St. Mary’s Cardinals 79-51 on Jan. 20.
In the win over Guardian Angels, the Trojans got in front by four at the end of the first rest stop but the Bluejays responded by taking a one-point lead into the halftime break, 23-22.
The teams played to an 18-18 stalemate in the third stanza but a strong fourth quarter swung the pendulum back in the Trojans’ favor to post the 10-point win.
Complete statistics of the game with GACC were not available at press time.
Wayne came to Cedar Catholic on Jan. 22 and went back home with a hard fought 51-47 win over the Trojans.
Cedar got out to an 11-8 lead at the end of the first but Wayne responded in the second frame to even the game heading into the halftime locker room.
The Blue Devils took a four-point lead in the third then made just enough plays at the end of the game to give the Trojans the loss.
Mason Baller led Cedar Catholic with 13 points on the night. Gavin Klug added 10 and Micah Cattau tossed in nine.
Baller just missed a double-double after corralling nine missed shots, Jared Rutar was credited with four boards.
Baller and Cattau each handed out three assists.
The St. Mary’s Cardinals took control of the game with the Trojans early and kept a stranglehold on the lead throughout the first three quarters.
At the halftime horn the lead was 47-27 and the Cardinals added another nine points to the advantage in the third before the Trojans nibbled a point off of the deficit in the final period.
Cattau was one bright spot for Cedar Catholic as he put in 13 points in the game.
Baller had six rebounds and Cattau distributed four assists and swiped four steals.
The Trojans were set to travel to Ponca Jan. 27 for another conference matchup before embarking on the Mid State Conference Tournament.
