1961: Casal honored for his livestock judging skills

RANDOLPH — Vincent Meyer and Carole Closter were crowned king and queen at the St. Frances school homecoming dance Friday night at the West Randolph ballroom.

RANDOLPH — R.K. Draper, Sr. of Belden and R.K. Draper, Jr. of Elgin have purchased the controlling interest of the Bank of Elgin at Elgin.

They have been members of the board of directors for several years. R.K. Draper, Sr. was named president of the bank at its annual stockholders meeting.

RANDOLPH — John Casal, Randolph High School Vo-Ag student, won first place in the junior division at the Hereford Livstock judging event at Norfolk Monday. In the senior division Thomas Van Slyke won fifth; Bill Gries, sixth and Bill Winkelbauer, seventh.

RANDOLPH — The VFW Auxiliary sponsored a pancake and sausage supper Sunday evening. Proceeds from the event will be contributed to the VFW National Home for widows and orphans of VFW members at Eaton Rapids, ME.

RANDOLPH — Carmen Backer and Patricia Viergutz were Randolph’s 1966 winners of the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow award.

Carmen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Backer, is the Randolph High School winner. Patricia, the St. Frances High School winner, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Viergutz.

The girls scored the highest in their respective classes in a written knowledge attitude examination taken by senior girls on December 7, 1965. They are now eligible for state and national scholarship awards.

Test papers of all school winners in the state are being judged, and a State Homemaker of Tomorrow and runner-up will be selected soon. The state winner will receive a $1,500 college scholarship and her school will be awarded a complete set of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. The national winner, selected from among the state winners will have her scholarship increased to $5,000.00.

RANDOLPH —Stockholders of the First State Bank re-elected all directors at their annual meeting last week.

Re-elected directors were Vernon Viergutz, Frances C. Viergutz, H. A. Strathman, Dr. G. E. Peters and H. H. Sherwood.

Vernon Viergutz was re-elected president. Other officers are H. A. Strathman, vice president and cashier; J. W. Moes, assistant vice president; Richard Neubauer, assistant cashier; and Neil Lackas, assistant cashier.

J. W. Moes was advanced to assistant vice president from assistant cashier and Neubauer from teller to assistant cashier. Lackas rejoined the bank this week, and he will also be associated with the insurance department.

The new bank building was discussed at the meeting and the directors met with the bank designer and architect.

Jan. 20, 1966

RANDOLPH —It was announced this week that the partnership of Ed Kessler and David Winkelbauer, as owners of the K-W Grain Company, has been dissolved.

The business is now being operated solely by Mr. Winkelbauer.

In 1963 the two Randolph men purchased the Dennis Elevator from Gordon Dennis and started the K-W Grain Company. Mr. Winkelbauer said he plans to retain the use of the name.

RANDOLPH —Mr. and Mrs. Michael Gubbels and family moved on Saturday to Columbus. Farmers in this community for several years, they recently held a sale to dispose of their farming equipment.

RANDOLPH — Miss Jana Buchanan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Buchanan, has been accepted at the Medical Institute of Minnesota in Minneapolis, for study in the medical field. Jana is a senior at Randolph High School.

RANDOLPH — Mrs. Harrison Huwaldt, Mrs. Vernice Leiting, Mrs. Don Winkelbauer and Mrs. Don Bauer attended the North Central Deanery meeting at Bloomfield January 19.

The new constitution for the newly organized Deanery was presented for the first time at the meeting.

RANDOLPH — Mr. and Mrs. William Lienemann will observe their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, Feb. 7 at the city auditorium. Hosting the event will be their children, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Lienemann, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Aaberg of Stanton.

RANDOLPH — Harold Weyhrich was presented a certificate of appreciation from Delmar Gansebom, Pierce County extension board chairman, (who is retiring from the Board), has served the past three years as a member of the Pierce County extension board and also as its treasurer.

RANDOLPH — Doug Nordhues and Rose Schmit were crowned king and queen at the FFA-FHA Sweetheart Ball at Randolph High School for this year.

RANDOLPH — The Randolph High Cardettes kept up their winning ways the past week as they upped their record to 15-0 as they defeated Neligh 53-28 on Friday evening and won over Laurel on Monday night 60-42.
