WYNOT — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils picked up a pair of wins, defeating Winnebago 66-50 at home before traveling to Niobrara and edging Niobrara-Verdigre 50-44 in a tight battle.
Wynot used a balanced scoring attack to take down Winnebago, then leaned on defense late to pull away from the Lady Cougars in a game that was tied going into the fourth quarter.
Against Winnebago, Wynot led from the opening minutes and built a 14-7 advantage after the first quarter. Addison Sharpe knocked down a pair of early 3-pointers and Kenna Oligmueller and Makenzie Foxhoven added baskets as the Lady Blue Devils set the tone.
Winnebago stayed within striking distance in the second quarter as the teams traded baskets. Wynot got scoring from five players in the period, while Marleigh Little Bear scored seven points and Jolan Black Bear hit a pair of treys to help Winnebago close the gap. Wynot still carried a 28-23 lead into halftime.
The Lady Blue Devils created separation in the third quarter behind Haley Wieseler, who drilled a pair of 3-pointers. Oligmueller and Jaylin Geisen each scored five points in the quarter as Wynot stretched the lead to 47-38.
Wynot finished the night on a 1912 run in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Foxhoven and Sharpe each scored six points in the final period, and Sharpe’s third 3-pointer helped keep momentum on Wynot’s side as the Lady Blue Devils closed out the 66-50 victory.
Oligmueller led Wynot with 17 points, followed by Wieseler with 15. Sharpe scored 13 points on three 3-pointers and Foxhoven finished with 10. Geisen added nine points.
Little Bear led all scorers with 21 points for Winnebago, and Black Bear finished with 14. Malani Bass and Jacel Bass each scored five points.
Later in the evening at Niobrara, Wynot and Niobrara-Verdigre traded punches through three quarters before the Lady Blue Devils pulled away in the final period.
Niobrara-Verdigre held a 14-13 edge after the opening quarter behind Delani Runnels, who scored seven points, and Mara Hoferer, who added a three-point play. Wieseler scored seven first-quarter points for Wynot and Oligmueller connected on a 3-pointer to keep the Lady Blue Devils close.
The Lady Cougars maintained their slim lead in the second quarter as Runnels knocked down two 3-pointers and Lynac Nielson added another. Wynot stayed within range with four points from Oligmueller and baskets from Wieseler and Sharpe, but Niobrara-Verdigre went into the locker room with a 26-23 halftime advantage.
Wynot tied the game in the third quarter as Oligmueller scored eight of the Lady Blue Devils’ 10 points in the period. Niobrara-Verdigre got four points from Runnels and a 3-pointer by Taylen Stark, leaving the game tied 33-33 heading into the fourth.
Wynot’s defense took control in the final quarter, holding Niobrara-Verdigre to one field goal and free throws. On the other end, Jaylin Geisen scored five points, Oligmueller had two offensive putbacks and Wieseler knocked down a 3-pointer as Wynot finished on a 17-11 run to earn the 50-44 win.
Oligmueller led Wynot with 19 points and Wieseler added 16. Sharpe scored six points, Geisen had five, Makenzie Foxhoven scored two and Taylor Pinkelman added two.
Runnels led Niobrara-Verdigre with 20 points, while Stark finished with nine and Hoferer added eight.
