1956: Leiting suffers broken arm after falling on ice

RANDOLPH - The Sons of Herman hall has been bought by the American Legion post of Randolph.

Discharges were received by S/ Sgt. Russell Van Slyke, Sgt. Harold Lenhoff, Pvt. Donald Maillard, T/5 Eugene Kessler, F1c Robert Lewis, S1c Edward Thompson, T/Sgt. Norbert Olberding, Pfc. Raleigh Madison.

RANDOLPH - Delmar Gartner was badly hurt when he lost control of his motorcycle after it struck a hole in the highway.

RANDOLPH — The housing shortage has become serious in Randolph. Return of veterans, whose families have been living with relatives during their absence has created the shortage as they are now seeking homes of their own.

RANDOLPH — The A & E tractor club held a meeting at the Harry Gosch home Dec. 30. It was the first meeting for the new year.

The members started their tractor books for this year.

The next meeting will be at the Mike McDonald home Jan. 16.

RANDOLPH — Harold Martindale and two daughters of Hartington visited Saturday afternoon with Mrs. W. I. Martindale.

RANDOLPH - The annual local campaign for funds for the March of Dimes will open in Randolph next week with a polio benefit to be staged at the city auditorium.

Roger Buchanan, local chairman, states the benefit will feature a variety of entertainment calculated to be of interest to young and old, to rural residents and town residents.

Last year the benefit proved a big success, both in proceeds and interest, and it is expected this year will be a repeat.

A volleyball game has been arranged between the Newcastle high school girls and the Randolph high school girls.

Newcastle, one of the better teams in northeast Nebraska this year, has a win over one of the best teams in the Sunflower conference. They are led by Kay Preisch, six-foot tall spiker, whose play is outstanding for a high school lass.

The Randolph girls have a record of six consecutive wins. This game, the first event on the program, begins at 7.

Following immediately will be some exhibition boxing bouts, of two rounds each. Larry Peters, 115, of Randolph high school will go against Don Harding, 115, junior from Newcastle high.

The boys fought a closely contested match at the Ponca invitational last year.

RANDOLPH - Installation of officers was held by the Randolph Masonic lodge Monday evening at the lodge hall. O. H. Scott was installing master and R. L. Buchanan acted as marshal.

Dean McGrew was installed as master. Other officers are Gordon Dennis, senior warden; Bert Berge, junior warden; A. B. Helms, secretary; N. B. Moran, treasurer; Leonard Ludeman, senior deacon; Jack Reed, junior deacon; Otto Opkis, tyler; Cecil B. Green, chaplain.

RANDOLPH - Several members of the Community club met Monday to complete the organizational structure of the Boy Scout Troop 103.

Officers and committeemen for the ensuing year: Harold Bush, chairman; Dr. L. J. Peebles, institutional representative; Duane Reed, advancement; Boyd Cunningham, finance; Dal Phillips, outdoors and activity; Rev. C. B. Green, Parent-contact; Dean McGrew and Lawrence Morey as assistants to Scoutmaster Marvin Weber.

Those present at the called session suggested that a financial campaign and a Cubbing program be presented for discussion at the next meeting of the Community club.

The scout troop will meet regularly on Monday evenings at 7:30 under the scoutmaster and assistants.

RANDOLPH - Clem Leiting suffered a fracture of the left arm Sunday afternoon when he slipped and fell on ice while at work at Home Oil company station. He was taken to the Osmond hospital, and on Tuesday went to a Sioux City hospital to have the fracture reduced.
