Cardinals claim a pair of L&C wins

WINSIDE - The Randolph Cardinal boys basketball team picked up two Lewis & Clark Conference road wins last week, edging Winside 53-51 on Jan. 8 and topping Walthill 52-46 on Jan. 6.

Against Winside, Randolph built an early lead and held off a late charge by the Wildcats. The Cardinals led 14-9 after the first quarter and carried a 30-23 advantage into halftime.

Winside trimmed the deficit in the second half, cutting the lead by two points in the third quarter and three more in the fourth, but Randolph was able to hang on for the two-point win.

Logan Lienemann led the Cardinals with 19 points. Adrian Samano added nine points on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting night. Brecken Shearer scored eight, Jaylen Junck had seven and Luke Harder finished with six.

Harder pulled down 10 rebounds while Lienemann narrowly missed a double-double with eight boards. Harder also dished out four assists and recorded three steals.

Randolph controlled most of the game against Walthill, jumping out to a 35-17 halftime lead. The Cardinals maintained the edge through three quarters, but the Blujays made a late push, outscoring Randolph 18-5 in the fourth quarter. The comeback attempt fell short as Randolph held on for the 52-46 win.

Ryan Engel paced the Cardinals with 15 points, while Lienemann scored 11. Harder and Samano each added seven points. Lienemann also grabbed nine rebounds and handed out five assists, while Samano collected seven rebounds.

Randolph opened a five-game homestand Tuesday, Jan. 13, hosting Niobrara/Verdigre. The Cardinals will also welcome Homer Jan. 15, Wausa Jan. 16, Bloomfield Jan. 20 and Winnebago Jan. 23.
