COLERIDGE — Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Middle School has received another grant to support its playground improvement initiative “The Play Pound,” LCC Middle School Principal Mark Leonard said.
Leonard said the project is focused on creating a safe, accessible and affordable playground space at the middle school for not only students, but also by younger families and other community members.
In addition to new playground improvements, Leonard said the initiative includes plans for a walking and rehabilitation trail along the perimeter of the playground area to promote cardiovascular health and wellness for students, community residents and senior citizens.
The project also calls for inclusive playground equipment and therapeutic or rehabilitation equipment along the trail so Level III students can interact and play alongside other students while adults and senior citizens can use the space to improve mobility and bone strength, Leonard said.
Leonard said LCC Middle School has raised $12,508 through three grants so far, including $8,294 from the Gardner Foundation, $2,214 from the Cedar County Tourism Board and $2,000 through Walmart’s Spark for Good program.
Leonard said the school has also submitted two additional grant applications and is waiting to learn whether they will be approved. Those include a $50,000 T-Mobile Hometown Grant and a $7,940 Casey’s Cash for Classrooms grant.
Leonard estimated the total cost of the Play Pound project will be about $75,000 to $80,000 by the time it is completed.
